The front of a supplement bottle is advertising and the back is regulated. The supplement facts panel and the ingredient line under it hold everything worth knowing, and reading them properly takes under a minute.

What a blend keeps

When a panel shows one weight covering several ingredients — 1,398 mg across five of them, for instance — that is a proprietary blend. Legal, very common, and it means the manufacturer has handed over the total while keeping the split.

What a blend gives up anyway

The ranking. Contents inside a blend must be listed in descending weight, so the opening name is the heaviest component and the closing name the lightest. That constraint is enforceable, and it is genuine information. JointsAid prints its five in that order and says as much on the page.

The total survives too. A 1,398 mg serving is a materially different proposition from a 300 mg one even before you know the breakdown.

Why the missing figures bite harder here

Joint research is dose-specific. Glucosamine trials use stated daily amounts; boswellia studies use standardized extracts at stated strengths. Strip out the per-ingredient numbers and lining a product up against that literature becomes impossible. That does not prove a product is under-dosed. It means the comparison is closed to you, which is a narrower and more accurate complaint.

Two reasons companies do it

The generous reading is competitive: publish exact ratios and the formula is trivial to copy. The ungenerous one is that a blend can hide a large cheap ingredient carrying four token ones. Both are plausible and neither is checkable from outside.

The lines worth more than the front label

• Serving size. Sixty capsules is one month at two a day and two at one. Compare by cost per day, never per bottle.
• Other ingredients. Shell, fillers, flow agents — and where a shellfish-derived component may or may not be named.
• The caution text. Interactions, pregnancy, age limits. Smallest print, largest consequence.
